Why isn’t Clelin Ferrell playing for the 49ers against the Packers in the NFL Divisional Round?

The San Francisco 49ers have given the green light to Dre Greenlaw, who was listed as questionable due to his Achilles tendon difficulties in the last two weeks, ahead of their decisive Divisional Round game against the Green Bay Packers. However, they have ruled out defensive end Clelin Ferrell.

Clelin Ferrell’s injury and consequences

In the Week 18 game against the Rams, Ferrell sustained a knee injury early on, confirmed by coach Kyle Shanahan. As a result, Ferrell was ruled out for at least one game, and there is a possibility that he may return in the playoffs. However, the probability of his return is not definite.

Shanahan’s decision to play the starters in the first quarter of the 49ers’ season finale game against the Rams was a smart move to avoid any rustiness in the playoffs. However, this decision came with an inherent risk, as football is a violent game. Unfortunately, Ferrell was the unlucky one who suffered an injury.

Ferrell is one of the 49ers’ most valuable assets, as he is a top-rated run defender. He is arguably the team’s best edge-setter, even better than Bosa and Young, who prioritize pass rush over run defense. Therefore, Ferrell’s absence could disadvantage the 49ers if the Packers run the ball well.

While Arik Armstead’s return from plantar fasciitis would undoubtedly benefit the 49ers’ interior run defense, Williams also attacks the edges where Ferrell usually plays. Hence, the 49ers would have to rely on their other defenders to compensate for Ferrell’s absence, which could be challenging.
