Why isn’t Nick Chubb playing for the Browns against the Commanders? NFL Week 5 injury status
With just one win so far, Cleveland will be looking to turn things around in Washington this evening but Kevin Stefanski has a number of players out.
The Cleveland Browns haven’t had much to smile about at the start of the regular season. In four outings, the team has won just once - the Week 2 trip to Jacksonville. They head into this evening’s matchup against the Commanders on the back of defeats to the Giants and the Raiders and with an injury list that just keeps growing.
Nick Chubb completed his first practice in over a year on Thursday but for now, the running back remains out on the reserve list. Chubb has been out of action since the start of last season. He ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament, and suffered damage to the medial collateral ligament and meniscus in his left knee during the Week 2 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. That required a trip to the operating table and months of painful rehabilitation.
What next for Nick Chubb after his return to practice?
Now that he has been cleared to practice, Cleveland will have 21 days to activate him to the 53-man roster but Chubb can no longer remain on the PUP list. In the meantime, no date has been set for his return to action. For now, he’s just happy that there’s light at the end of the tunnel, telling reporters last week, “Once you get out there and you’re running around, it’s like you’re 8 years old again. It’s like riding a bike. That’s not something that’s in my head. You can’t control that. So, I’m going to go out there and play fast.”
Chubb is one of five players ruled out of tonight’s clash with the Commanders: Jordan Hicks (ribs, elbow, triceps), Nyheim Hines (knee), Nyheim Hines (knee), James Hudson (shoulder) and Alex Wright (triceps) will also watch the game from the sidelines.
Jack Conklin (hamstring), Michael Dunn (illness), David Njoku (ankle), Pierre Strong (hamstring) and Jedrick Wills (knee) are questionable. There have been no new updates regarding the status of eight other players: Myles Garrett, Dawand Jones, Jerry Jeudy, Greg Newsome II, Ogbo Okoronkwo, Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Ethan Pocic and Za’Darius Smith.
The 2024 NFL regular season game between the Cleveland Browns and the Washington Commanders is scheduled to take place on Sunday 6 October 2024 at Northwest Stadium in Landover, kicking off at 1 p.m. ET.
The game will be broadcast live by Fox and will be streamed on Fox Sports Live and NFL+.
