Why isn’t Patrick Mahomes nominated for NFL MVP?

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback has not been included in the list of finalists for the National Football League’s most valuable player award.

Patrick Mahomes continues to make history in the NFL Playoffs after leading the Kansas City Chiefs to their sixth AFC Championship final, where they will face the Baltimore Ravens. However, a number of observers were surprised to learn that the two-time Super Bowl champion is not among the finalists for the season’s Most Valuable Player award.

Mahomes, who was named the MVP of the season last year and also received the award for the best player in Super Bowl LVII after the 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, was surpassed by Lamar Jackson, Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey, Dak Prescott, and Josh Allen. Check out the full list of nominees for the NFL awards.

Regular season woes for non-MVP Mahomes

Mahomes has posted impressive numbers in the Playoffs with 477 yards and 3 touchdown passes in the two games he won against the Miami Dolphins and the Buffalo Bills. However, he did not shine in the regular season in the same manner. The Kansas City quarterback concluded the season with 4,183 yards, ranking sixth in that department, below Tua Tagovailoa, Jared Goff, Dak Prescott, Josh Allen, and Brock Purdy, the latter three being nominees for the top award.

Additionally, Mahomes also finished eighth in terms of touchdown passes (27), well below the 41 he achieved last season. Prescott led with 36 touchdown passes in that category, followed by Jordan Love (32). Brock Purdy and Josh Allen secured the third and fifth spots, respectively.

Another statistic that worked against Mahomes was that he had his worst year in terms of interceptions thrown (14). Among the nominees, only Josh Allen (18) had more interceptions.

Jackson favorite to win MVP

Lamar Jackson emerges as the clear favorite to win the NFL season MVP. Even Mahomes praised the outstanding performance by the Baltimore quarterback this season.

“He’s going to be the MVP for a reason,” Mahomes said about Jackson, projecting that the Baltimore quarterback will win the award for 2023. “He goes out, leads his team, scores, runs, throws. He does whatever it takes to win, and that’s what the great ones do,” he acknowledged before Sunday’s matchup.
