Why will the Chicago Bears have another forgettable season?

Unless the Chicago Bears add to or evolve their offensive line, quarterback Justin Fields can’t be the cornerstone of the team’s expected comeback.

The Chicago Bears will face a season full of challenges starting with a reconstruction that will have as its first objective, getting out of the bottom of the NFC North.

To find a Bears winning season in the record books, you have to go back to pre-pandemic times when the coronavirus was not in the vocabulary of humanity and the Monsters of the Midway offense was recharged. on the arm of young Mitchell Trubisky.

However, that 2018 season was only a palliative for an organization that, despite having a great tradition within the NFL, barely boasts a winning campaign in the past nine years.

Chicago Bears begin the rebuilding process

The Bears started this spring a new stage without general manager Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy. It was no surprise that the organization parted ways with both, following the lack of success under their leadership.

To reverse the trend, franchise owners turned to a new Ryan and a new Matt. Chicago tapped Ryan Poles from the Chiefs’ personnel department as their new general manager, and hired the Colts’ defensive coordinator, Matt Eberflus, as their head coach.

The rebuilding within the Bears is underway, but fans will have to be patient. Although the team has multiple young talents, for now it is not enough to achieve the rehabilitation of the losing squad.

From the general management office to the sideline of the field, quarterback Justin Fields is believed to be the centerpiece of the rebuild.

Chicago's offense urgently needs to evolve the offensive line to weaponize its up-and-coming quarterback. Last season, the Bears allowed 58 sacks for 429 yard losses.

Fields will now get calls from new offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, someone who is expected to have a running game on the outside of tackles and vertical passes. But without quality linemen, it can all be summed up in one Chicago constant: improvise.

Over the years, Chicago's defense has been a hallmark of the appellation. The vast majority of Bears teams are remembered for the quality and strength of this department. As a defensive specialist, Matt Eberflus will try to imbue the aggressive recovery of balls that he achieved in Indianapolis, but it will cost him to adapt to a 4-3 scheme that has not been executed in Chicago since 2014.

Tackling machine Roquan Smith is the heart of the defense.

Perspective

It’s hard to expect the Chicago Bears to compete this year for a postseason spot. The biggest challenge they will have in this reconstruction process is to reach the six victories of last season. In 2023, the sun could rise in the windy city, but for now, it appears they will be facing dark days.
