Update:

Jalen Hurts has become one of the biggest stars in the NFL in recent years, leading the Philadelphia Eagles to victory in Super Bowl LIX, where he was named MVP. So you might be surprised to learn what fuel he takes on board at lunchtime.

What Jalen Hurts eats to stay at the top

NFL players are known for following high-calorie, high-protein diets, which Hurts inevitably does at certain times of the day. In a Men’s Health “Eat Like” video, the quarterback and former powerlifter revealed that he tries to incorporate “a good amount” of fish, steak, and chicken into his diet, along with “tons of water” and one or two protein shakes.

The Eagles star explained that his breakfast typically consists of eggs, turkey bacon, and a carb such as potatoes or toast, all fairly common among professional athletes.

Hurts’ surprisingly light lunch

The same probably can’t be said for what Hurts generally eats in the middle of the day. “I try to keep it light for lunch,” he said.

By “light,” he means a salad, mentioning Caesar and Cobb variations in the video. Caesar salads are usually made with romaine lettuce, Parmesan cheese, croutons, and Caesar dressing, while Cobb salads often feature chopped lettuce topped with chicken, bacon, hard-boiled eggs, tomatoes, avocado, and blue cheese.

There’s still a decent amount of protein in there, just less than you might expect for a football star. That contrasts with his dinner, which features the “big three” - fish, chicken, and steak - along with a variety of vegetables.

Avoiding carbs and staying light

The Texas native explained that he doesn’t like walking around “feeling too heavy all the time,” which means he keeps a strict limit on how many carbs he consumes.

Still, there’s room for a little indulgence. After Eagles victories, Hurts is treated to cookies made by the wife of Eagles defensive ends and outside linebackers coach Jeremiah Washburn, a postgame ritual that’s become something of a good luck charm.

“He gets them for the D-line room, but somehow I found myself getting a bag of cookies as well, and we kept winning and he kept them coming,” Hurts said. “Sometimes I’ll indulge, sometimes I don’t.”
