Steve Kerr, the head coach of the U.S. Men’s Basketball Team, has publicly expressed his support for Vice President Kamala Harris in her presidential bid. This endorsement, shared alongside NBA star Steph Curry, highlights Kerr’s active engagement in political discourse.

Steve Kerr is no stranger to political activism. Known for his progressive views, Kerr has consistently used his platform to advocate for social justice, gun control, and civil rights. His outspoken criticism of former President Donald Trump and his support for various Democratic initiatives have positioned him as a prominent figure in the intersection of sports and politics.

His view might come from when his father, Malcolm H. Kerr, was tragically assassinated on January 18, 1984. Malcolm Kerr was the president of the American University of Beirut (AUB) at the time. He was shot and killed by two gunmen while walking to his office on the university campus in Beirut, Lebanon.

Endorsing Kamala Harris

During the 2024 Paris Olympics, Kerr and Curry made headlines by endorsing Kamala Harris for president. Kerr praised Harris, stating, “I believe she is a great candidate who can lead our country forward.” This endorsement comes at a crucial time as Harris campaigns to become the first female president of the United States.

Kerr’s endorsement of Harris is consistent with his long-standing alignment with the Democratic Party. He has been vocal about his support for Democratic policies and candidates, advocating for progressive change both on and off the court. His stance on issues such as gun control, where he has called for stricter regulations following personal tragedy, underscores his commitment to advocating for policies that promote safety and equality.

Kerr’s political engagement extends beyond endorsements. He has encouraged athletes to use their platforms to speak out on important issues, fostering a culture of activism within the sports community. His leadership has inspired many athletes to become more politically active, recognizing the influence they hold in shaping public opinion and policy.
