How many medals did USA, China, Great Britain, and Russia Win at Tokyo 2020?
It will be go down in history as the delayed Olympics for the pandemic but also for some stunning athletic achievements.
The Tokyo 2020 Olympics will partly be remembered as the edition that was massively impacted by the covid-19 pandemic, so much so that it was delayed until the summer of 2021. But despite that, the Games were another testament of what the world’s athletes are capable of and when it concluded, the final medal counts for some of the highest profile nations showed exceptional performances. Let’s take a look at some of the key athletes from the USA, China, Great Britain, and Russia.
Team USA’s Olympic medal machine
The United States dominated the medal tally with a total of 113 medals, the highest of any nation. Their count included 39 golds, 41 silvers, and 33 bronzes. The USA’s standout athlete was Caeleb Dressel. The swimmer dazzled with five golds in the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 100m butterfly, and the 4x100m medley relay. Another notable mention goes to Katie Ledecky who went home with two golds and two silvers from her feats in the pool.
China
China finished with 88 medals, including 38 golds, 32 silvers, and 18 bronzes.
A key performer was Zhang Yufei, with the swimmer winning four medals (two gold, two silver) across the 100m and 200m butterfly, 4x100m medley relay, and 4x200m freestyle relay.
Great Britain
Great Britain earned 64 medals, including 22 golds, 20 silvers, and 22 bronzes.
In the pool, Duncan Scott becomes the first British athlete to win four medals in a single Games across the 4 × 200m freestyle relay, 200m freestyle, 200m individual medley and the 4×100m medley relay. Adam Peaty and James Guy were also successful in the pool collecting two goals and a silver each.
Russia
Competing as the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), due to the doping scandal, Russia secured 71 medals, including 20 golds, 28 silvers, and 23 bronzes, putting them fifth overall.
Mariya Lasitskene claimed gold in the women’s high jump, while there were multiple successes in wrestling, gymnastics and fencing among other disciplines.
The Tokyo 2020 Olympics provided a platform for these athletes to shine on a global stage, and now the world looks forward to Paris, France, for more medals from nations big and small around the globe.
