Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama leads the men’s Olympic golf tournament after day one, having shot an eight-under-par round of 63 at Le Golf National today.

How did USA’s golfers perform on day one?

Matsuyama is two shots clear of the defending champion, the United States’ world No. 2 Xander Schauffele, who in turn is one stroke ahead of a three-man chasing pack comprising Chile’s Joaquín Niemann, Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo and South Korea’s Tom Kim.

American Scottie Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked men’s golfer, finished round one on five under, in an eight-way tie for sixth.

The two other members of Team USA, Collin Morikawa and Wyndham Clark, find themselves significantly further back heading into round two. Morikawa is down in joint 29th, after a one-under round of 70 today, while Clark carded a four-over 75 to end day one in a tie for 56th.

How much prize money does the winner earn?

There is no official prize purse at the Paris 2024 golf tournament, but national Olympic committees tend to offer their athletes a cash reward for winning the gold medal.

For example, the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee is paying all of its team members $37,500 per gold in France, with $22,500 up for grabs for taking silver and $15,000 for claiming bronze.

Success at the Olympics is also worth world-ranking points, and the winner of the tournament receives an exemption for all four major golf tournaments in 2025. He will also get an exemption for the 2025 Players Championship and, as long as he is a member of the PGA Tour, the 2025 Sentry Championship.
