The moment of truth has arrived for the USA women’s gymnastics team. After the fantastic display in the men’s team finals, which saw the U.S. win a medal in men’s gymnastics for the first time since 2008, it’s now the turn for the women’s team’s moment of truth.

The USA women’s team performance in the qualifiers stage was incredible: they came first in the overall team table with 172.296 points, with Simone Biles showing why she is already an artistic gymnastics legend. The Ohio gymnast obtained the highest score for the U.S. in the balance beam (14.733), floor exercise (14.600), and vault (15.300), while in the uneven bars, the Tokyo 2020 gold medalist Suni Lee got the highest mark (14.866).

During the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Biles decided to withdraw from the women’s team gymnastics finals due to her mental health. “Whenever you get in a high-stress situation, you kind of freak out. I have to focus on my mental health and not jeopardize my health and well-being,” were the gymnast’s words after making that impactful decision.

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games finals represent a new opportunity for her. However, for a moment, the alarms went off when, during the qualifiers, Biles appeared to suffer an injury that worried those watching on.

What injury does Simone Biles have?

The gymnast sustained a calf injury in the qualifiers on Sunday, July 28, while warming up for the floor exercise. Biles was quickly attended to by their trainers, who taped up her left foot before she competed in the apparatus left: floor, vault, and uneven bars, where she scored some of the highest marks.

U.S. coach Cecile Landi addressed Simone Biles’s situation, sharing the good news to all those worried about the injury. Landi said the 27-year-old has been carrying a minor calf injury for a couple of weeks but despite this, there is no plan to sideline Biles in the women’s team finals.

Biles will go last for Team U.S. in three of the four rotations: vault, floor exercise, and balance beam, while on the uneven bars, she will be second. The women’s team finals will take place today, July 30, with the start date scheduled for 12:15 p.m. E.T.
