The United States will be looking to make an impact in the Summer Games’ boxing competition with eight talented fighters.

One of the most special moments in world sports has arrived. The 2024 Olympic Games start today with the opening ceremony, an event that will welcome two weeks of intense and exciting competition with the best athletes around the globe.

The USA team will be looking to be the nation with the most gold medals again, after being on the top of the medals standings in the 2021 Tokyo Games. However, the results in boxing weren’t as good as expected and the American delegation will try to do better in the boxing event, which will be held in the French capital.

Although the USA didn’t excel in the boxing tournament three years ago, it’s the country with boxing’s highest medal count with 117 overall -50 gold medals-, according to the Olympics official page.

Who are the USA boxers at the Paris Olympics?

A lineup of eight boxers, four men and four women, are in the French capital to represent the USA in the boxing events.

Men’s category boxers

The 29-year-old Roscoe Hill leads the men’s boxing delegation. The seasoned competitor from Texas will compete in the flyweight category and is regarded as a strong contender for the gold medal. He will try to win the tournament and become the first boxer to win the gold since Andre Ward in 2004.

The Maryland native, Jahmal Harvey, will feature in the featherweight division. His gold medal at the Pan American Games in Santiago ensured his presence in Paris, where he will fight for the Olympic glory guided by his technique and boxing IQ. He’s regarded as one of the boxers with the most possibilities of winning a medal.

Omari Jones is the third boxer who will represent the USA men’s boxing team. After a few medals in different competitions, Jones, a middleweight competitor from Orlando will be a threat to his opponents.

The super heavyweight Joshua Edwards was selected for the Olympics after a brilliant 2023 campaign. His talent and power make of him one of the boxers to watch in the men’s tournament.

Women’s category boxers

If the men’s category is full of talent and winning mentality, the same can be said of the four women who will represent the USA’s boxing in the Summer Games.

The flyweight Jennifer Lozano, 21, is one of the biggest candidates to make history in Paris. La Traviesa, who got into boxing after being bullied as a kid, secured her spot with a silver medal performance at the 2023 Pan American Games.

Alyssa Mendoza, one year younger than Lozano, is the youngest team member and the first Olympic boxer from Idaho. After winning medals in three major events and being dominant in her first year of international competition, the featherweight boxer seems more than ready to take on the Olympic challenge.

Morelle McCane, 29, is USA’s welterweight fighter. In 2023, she won a gold medal and two silvers at international tournaments. She also made history, as she became the first female boxer from Cleveland to qualify for an Olympic Games.

Jajaira Gonzalez completes the women’s boxing roster for the Olympics. The Californian lightweight boxer earned her Olympic presence with a bronze medal at the 2023 Pan American Games. Before that, she clinched gold at the Junior World Championships, the Youth World Championships, and the 2014 Youth Olympics.
