The quintet of Simone Biles, Sunisa Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey and Hezley Rivera will bid to reclaim gold for the USA in the Paris 2024 women’s team all-around final, after sweeping through qualification at Bercy Arena on Sunday.

Making her return to Olympics action three years after mental-health issues forced her to pull out of several events at the Tokyo Summer Games, Biles dazzled as the USA topped qualification. The four-time Olympic champion, who is the most decorated gymnast in history, led the way with an all-around score of 59.566, helping the Americans to an unmatched team total of 172.296.

Team USA coach proud of “amazing” Biles

Speaking after Biles’ stunning display, USA gymnastics coach Cecile Landi lauded the 27-year-old. “I can’t express it - I’m really proud of her and what she’s been through and what she’s showing the world what she’s capable of doing,” Landi said. “It was pretty amazing, 59.5. Not perfect, so she can improve even… [but] just really good.”

What happened to Biles in Tokyo? What are the ‘twisties’?

Biles returned from a two-year career break in August 2023, having stepped away from competition after enduring what’s known as the ‘twisties’ - a mental block that leads gymnasts to feel midair disorientation - at the Olympics in summer 2021.

In the team all-around final in Japan, which saw the USA finish second to the ROC, Biles withdrew after the first rotation - having appeared “lost in the air”, according to TV pundit and former USA Olympian Laurie Hernandez. She also pulled out of the individual all-around, vault, uneven bars and floor exercise finals.

In a June 2024 interview on the podcast Call Her Daddy, Biles echoed Hernandez’s phrase as she described her experience of the ‘twisties’, adding: “Your mind and your body are at a disconnect. Your body is going to try to do something, and your mind is going to be like, ‘No, you’re not doing this.’”
