Currently starring for the United States Women’s National Team at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Sophia Smith isn’t just saying “I do” to the question, “are you good at scoring goals?” That’s right, she’s all set to marry NFL player Michael Wilson, a romance that blossomed at Stanford University.

The couple announced their engagement in June 2024 with Smith joyfully captioning, “Forever always meant with you.”

Smith and Wilson: a sporting wedding awaits

The relationship between the two stars of sport faced challenges, including Smith’s move to the Portland Thorns in 2020 and Wilson’s significant foot injury that same year, which kept him off the field for a season. Despite these hurdles, though, Wilson was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in 2023, with Smith celebrating his success alongside him.

As a standout wide receiver at Stanford, Wilson endured multiple injuries but was still named team captain and honoured for his courage. He holds both a master’s and a bachelor’s degree from Stanford. His professional dream came true with the Cardinals’ 2023 draft pick. Smith has flourished in soccer, both for her club and country, and was the only American on the shortlist for the 2023 Ballon d’Or Féminin.

The proposal, when it came, was a romantic affair in a flower garden, with family watching from afar. The couple, who met in college and made their relationship public in 2019, have shown incredible support for each other’s careers. As yet a date has not been revealed for the wedding, one that will surely have a number of famous sporting faces in attendance.
