The 200m at the World Athletics Championships is always a great attraction for the public due to the explosiveness and power of the event. After the 2017 retirement of Usain Bolt, who left a huge void as one of the greatest athletes in history, it is proving hard to find a successor to the Jamaican even today.

200m at the World Athletics Championships: the schedule

The 200m will take place over several days. In the men’s draw, the competition will start on Monday 18 July at 5:05pm PT/8:05pm ET, with the semi-finals scheduled for Tuesday 19th at 6:50pm PT/9:50pm ET. Meanwhile, the women’s heats will begin on Monday 18th at 6pm PT/9pm ET, before the semi-finals take place on Tuesday 19th at at 6pm PT/9pm ET.

The men’s final will then be on Thursday 21 July around 7:50pm PT/10:50pm ET. Immediately beforehand, the women’s final will get underway at 7:35pm PT/10:35pm ET.

Men’s field:

Kenneth Bednarek (USA): At the age of 22, he won silver at the Olympics in Tokyo last summer with a time of 19:68, and goes into the World Athletics Championships as one of the big favourites.

Noah Lyles (USA): Lyles took bronze in Tokyo (19:74) and is the reigning world champion after beating Andre De Grass at Doha 2019. He is the second best athlete so far this year and at 25 years old, he heads to Oregon 22 in the midst of the best period of his career.

Andre De Grasse (CAN): After claiming gold with a time of 19:62 in Tokyo last summer, De Grasse is being heavily tipped to add the world title to his Olympic crown.

Erriyon Knighton (USA): At the age of 17, he obtained an Olympic diploma in the Japanese capital after coming fourth. With his whole career still ahead of him, he will seek to take a step forward in his first senior World Championships.

Women’s field:

Elaine Thompson-Herah (JAM): A legend in the world of athletics. The five-time Olympic champion, who won silver in the 200m at the 2015 World Athletics Championships, goes into this event out to pick up yet another international gold.

Shericka Jackson (JAM): After enjoying great success in the 100m, 400m and 4x100 and 4x400m in Tokyo, Jackson will compete for the first time in the 200m. She is also one of the chief contenders.

Gabrielle Thomas (USA): Having won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics with a time of 21:87, the American will seek her first medal at a World Championships.

What are the current 200m world records?

Men’s world record: Usain Bolt (19:19), set at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin. In addition to the world record, the Jamaican also holds the fastest ever Olympic time, 19:30, which he ran at Beijing 2008.

Women’s world record: Florence Griffith Joyner (21:34), set at the Seoul Olympics in 1988. A record that has so far lasted for 34 years without any athlete having being able to beat it.
