Track legend Allyson Felix bid farewell to the sport she has dominated by running the mixed 4x400m relay in the Oregon22 World Athletics Championships and taking home a bronze medal. She had said earlier this year that she would retire after the 2022 season, and the third-place finish was a treasured prize to wrap up a distinguished career.

The victory at Eugene rounds out her lifetime haul at international events to an even 30. The mixed gender relay gave her her 19th medal at world championships, while she has an 11-medal count at the Olympic Games.

Allyson Felix: World record for World Championship titles

The 36-year-old’s tally at the World Championships is more than any other athlete in the competition’s history. She has won 13 gold medals, three silvers, and three bronze medals. She leads Jamaican sprint icon Usain Bold who is an 11-time gold medalist, and fellow American sprinter and jumper Carl Lewis, who was world champion eight times.

Felix has also met with record-breaking success at the Olympic Games, as the most bemedaled American track and fleld athlete, male or female, in the contest’s history. She is also the most successful female track Olympian, competing in five consecutive Games and winning seven gold medals, three silvers, and one bronze.

The sprint ace began her career as a specialist in the 200 meter event, winning a silver medal in her first Games in Athens 2004, and then a gold in London 2012. This was to be her only individual gold in the Olympics.

She eventually expanded her repertoire to become a champion of the 400 meters, winning multiple medals in this event both as an individual, and as part of the 4x400m relay.
