2022 US Open: Who plays today September 4? Match times for Medvedev vs Kyrgios, Gauff...

The fourth round at the 2022 US Open gets underway on Sunday with Daniil Medvedev vs Nick Kyrgios the pick of the last-32 encounters.

The fields at the US Open have now been whittled down to 32 players and Day 7 at Flushing Meadows can be considered the start of the business end of the tournament. In the men’s draw, the bracket has opened up nicely for a handful of players, among them defending champion and world number one Daniil Medvedev and Nick Kyrgios, who remains active in singles and doubles as he seeks to land an elusive maiden Grand Slam singles title to add his Australian Open triumph with his good friend Thanasi Kokkinakis earlier this season. The good news for both players is that their path to the final is a comparatively easy one, at least on paper, with second and third seeds Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz in the other half of the draw. The bad news for Medvedev and Kyrgios is that they play each other in the fourth round in the pick of Sunday’s action in New York.

The winner of that contest will face either 12th seed Pablo Carreño Busta or 27th seed Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinals before a projected meeting with French Open runner-up Casper Ruud in the semis. The Norwegian takes on qualifier Corentin Moutet, who beat three-times Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka in round one and 21st seed Botic van de Zandschlup in round two. Matteo Berrettini plays unseeded Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the fourth and final game in the top half of the men’s draw.

Gauff, Garcia on quarterfinal collision course

The women’s bracket has been wide open since Day 1, such is the strength of the field in New York. Several players remaining in contention have peaked at the right moment, chief among them Caroline Garcia, who won in Cincinnati to reclaim a place in the WTA top 20 and has dropped only 15 games in the opening three rounds, thrashing 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu 6-3, 6-2 on her last outing. The Frenchwoman plays US 29th seed Alison Riske-Amritraj for a place in the quarters, where either Shuai Zhang or Coco Gauff await.

Zhang, the world number 36 and a five-ranked doubles specialist who has yet to drop a set at the 2022 US Open in singles, women’s and mixed doubles, is a long-shot against world number 12 Gauff on her home court but in the bottom half of the draw anything is possible as proven by Ajla Tomljanovic and Liudmila Samsonova, who are both into the fourth round of a hard-court major for the first time. The winner of that game will go on to play either fifth seed and Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabuer or 18th seed Veronika Kudermetova, who has yet to drop a set and beat Dalma Galfi for the loss of just two games in her third-round match.
