The 27-year-old professional golfer from Tennessee carded a 59 in his opening round at the 2024 John Deere Classic to become only the 14th player in PGA Tour history to break the 60 barrier. Reflecting on his career achievement, Springer described the round as “unexpected in a way and kind of special.” His remarkable performance was highlighted by a crucial hole-out on the 17th, which gave him a chance at this milestone.

One of the key moments of his round was the hole-out on the 17th, one of two eagles he made that day. Springer started strong, going out in 27. When asked about the hot start, he commented, “It just seems like I made everything I looked at on the front. I kind of got a stretch going from like two to six, making 15 to 20-foot putts on every hole.

Springer’s recent form has been impressive, coming off his second top-10 finish of the season just last week. He attributes his success to smarter practice and better time and energy management. Additionally, reconnecting with an old coach helped him return to fundamentals that have proven effective in the past. “It’s starting to pay off,” he remarked.

This opening round of 59 ties the tournament record set by Paul Goydos in 2010 at the John Deere Classic and matches the lowest round on the PGA Tour this season, equaling Cameron Young’s recent 59 at Hartford.

Jordan Spieth also made his return to the John Deere Classic today, recording his first competitive round at the event in nine years. The 30-year-old expressed his hope to recapture the youthful exuberance and excitement he experienced as a teenager playing here, with the aim of getting back into the winner’s circle. However, his day got off to a challenging start.

Spieth began his round on the back nine and bogeyed his second hole of the day. Reflecting on his performance, he noted, “I felt like I played the difficult holes well and the easier holes more poorly.” This sentiment echoed the frustrations he has faced throughout this season, in which he finished at T90 with a -2 score.
