American sports powerhouse leads world’s highest-paid athletes list
Forbes reveals that the world’s highest-paid athletes generate billions through salaries, endorsements, and business ventures.

Professional sports have gone far beyond the boundaries of the game and have become a financial phenomenon. According to Forbes, the 50 highest-paid athletes in the world generated $4.1 billion in income over the past 12 months, before taxes and commissions, just below the record $4.2 billion set in 2025. A key part of that figure comes from off-field earnings, which this year reached a record $1.1 billion among the top 50, surpassing the levels seen over the past four years.
Basketball and football lead the list of represented sports. The NBA placed 20 players in the ranking, followed by the NFL with nine, and soccer with seven athletes spread across various leagues. Other sports such as golf, Formula 1, MLB, boxing, and tennis complete the top 50, while disciplines like cricket, NASCAR, and the NHL do not appear.
The American empire
The United States dominates the list with 29 athletes, including figures such as LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry, reflecting the economic strength of its leagues and the global power of its brands. This U.S. influence is reinforced by the ability to generate income off the court and field, from endorsements to investments, consolidating a global presence that goes beyond sporting statistics.

Among the athletes who set financial benchmarks are Shohei Ohtani with $125 million in off-field income, LeBron James with $85 million, and Lionel Messi with $70 million. Cristiano Ronaldo leads the overall list with $300 million, while Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez tops Latin American representation with $170 million.
This phenomenon shows that the sports business no longer depends solely on athletic performance, but also on athletes’ ability to build personal commercial empires.

The economic impact of the United States extends beyond salaries and endorsements. The combination of global brands, powerful leagues, and athlete-entrepreneurs has transformed sport into a platform of international influence. The presence of these superstars highlights how the integration of talent, business, and marketing now defines who dominates both on the field and in finance.
