A tourist belts out Oasis at a bar in Spain - and the singer’s identity leaves onlookers gobsmacked
A famous friend of the Gallagher brothers tried, without much success, to sing the legendary “Wonderwall” in a bar in the Canary Islands.
“And all the roads we have to walk are winding / And all the lights that lead us there are blinding / There are many things that I would like to say to you / But I don’t know how. / Because maybe / You’re gonna be the one that saves me / And after all / You’re my wonderwall.”
Just reading those lines is enough to make the iconic melody of Oasis’s “Wonderwall” start playing in your head. The track, part of the legendary album (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?, became a defining anthem of the Britpop era.
Now, after years apart, the band has finally reunited - packing venues and reigniting the fervor of fans for this second chapter.
But as familiar as those lyrics are to most music lovers, it turns out they weren’t quite second nature to one of the Gallagher brothers’ close friends. That became hilariously clear to a tourist enjoying the last days of summer break with her two kids at a bar in Tenerife.
Boxing great butchers Oasis hit
Carly Leahy was relaxing at a Costa Adeje venue, listening to live music with her children, when the guitarist on stage invited someone from the crowd to join him for a rendition of “Wonderwall”. The British tourists in the bar were stunned when they realized who had stepped up to the mic: none other than boxing legend - and longtime Gallagher pal - Ricky Hatton.
Despite the initial excitement of seeing a sports icon in such an unexpected setting, Hatton’s performance was... well, let’s just say it didn’t quite rival Liam Gallagher’s. Not only was his singing off-key, but he didn’t even seem to know the lyrics to one of the most recognizable songs of the last few decades.
“Noel needs to have a word”
“He attempted to hit those notes, but he definitely messed up the words,” Leahy said, per the Manchester Evening News. “I was surprised he didn’t know them by heart, because I remember Oasis going to his fights back in the day. [Songwriter] Noel [Gallagher] needs to have a word and send the lyrics over to him.”
However, Leahy also said of Hatton: “Afterwards, he was so patient and kind to everyone who approached him, so that was quite nice. The kids were over the moon to see him. Some people have really gone in on him, but he was on his holiday, enjoying himself.”
