Update:

Nearly three decades after they first changed tennis forever, Serena and Venus Williams are about to add another chapter to their legacy, this time, rewriting what longevity in the sport looks like.

With a combined age of 90, the Williams sisters are set to compete in doubles at Wimbledon after receiving a wild card entry, marking one of the most remarkable late-career returns the tournament has ever seen. And if history is any indication, they won’t just be there for nostalgia.

A return no one saw coming

Serena Williams, now 44, only recently returned to competitive tennis after nearly four years away from the sport. Her last appearance before this comeback came in 2022, when she and Venus played doubles together at the U.S. Open.

Venus, who turns 46, has continued to compete sporadically in recent years, but the sisters sharing a court again, especially at Wimbledon, carries even more significance.

Their wild card entry signals more than a ceremonial appearance. It suggests belief, both from organizers and perhaps from the sisters themselves, that they can still compete on one of tennis’ biggest stages.

A Wimbledon legacy unlike any other

Few players in history are more synonymous with Wimbledon than the Williams sisters. Between them, they have collected 21 titles and medals at the All England Club. Serena has won seven singles titles, while Venus has claimed five. Together, they have dominated doubles, winning six Wimbledon titles as a pair, tied for the most in tournament history.

Their success on grass wasn’t accidental. Their powerful serves, aggressive baseline play, and unmatched athleticism made them nearly unstoppable on the surface during their prime. Even now, those same weapons could make them a dangerous draw, especially in doubles, where experience and chemistry often outweigh speed.

In a sport that increasingly skews younger, the Williams sisters’ return challenges conventional expectations about age and performance. Most professional players retire in their early to mid-30s. Competing, let alone contending, in your mid-40s is almost unheard of at the Grand Slam level.

But Serena and Venus have never followed the usual script. Their presence at Wimbledon isn’t just about chasing another title. It’s about redefining what’s possible in elite sports, particularly for women, and reminding a new generation of fans why they became icons in the first place.

Could Serena return to singles too?

One of Wimbledon’s women’s singles wild card spots remains unannounced, and Serena has not ruled out a singles return.

While nothing has been confirmed, the possibility alone has sparked widespread speculation. A singles comeback at Wimbledon would mark her first in four years and instantly become one of the biggest storylines of the tournament.

Whether they make a deep run or not, the Williams sisters stepping onto the grass together again is already historic. From teenage phenoms to global superstars to pioneers who reshaped the sport, Serena and Venus have spent their careers doing the unprecedented. At Wimbledon this year, they’ll do it again, proving that greatness doesn’t fade. It evolves.
