Alcaraz defeats Jarry in a hard-fought clash

The Spaniard advanced to the round of 16 in Wimbledon but had to dig deep to get the victory against the dangerous Jarry.

Update:
The Spaniard advanced to the round of 16 in Wimbledon but had to dig deep to get the victory against the dangerous Jarry.

It was harder than expected, but Carlos Alcaraz emerged victorious and took a step forward toward the final.

The current world No. 1, who defeated Nicolas Jarry in February at the Rio de Janeiro Open semifinals in three sets, needed four this time to get his hand raised in almost four hours of play (6-3, 6-7, 6-3, 7-5).

Alcaraz, who won the Queen’s tournament in June, had his most difficult game at the All England Club so far, with the Chilean taking the second set and making the match more interesting than what many expected.

The US Open champion had already struggled on Friday to defeat Alexandre Muller, although he managed to close the match in straight sets. Alcaraz will now play against the winner of the match between Alexander Zverev and 2021 runner-up Matteo Berrettini.

Alcaraz, satisfied despite suffering

Although he had more problems than expected, Carlitos was happy with the result and with the level of tennis shown in London.

It was really tough, it was a really good match and he played really well”, Alcaraz said.

I’m just really happy with the level I played to get through this match. I’m really happy to play here, it’s something I dreamed of when I was really young, probably when I started playing tennis”, he added.

Juan Carlos Ferrero’s pupil also admitted that Wimbledon is a special tournament and expressed his happiness for having won at the Centre Court:

“This is something special and the most beautiful court I’ve been in and I would like to be back here”.

Alcaraz, the second favorite to lift the Wimbledon trophy after Novak Djokovic, is looking to win the second major and the 12th ATP singles title of his career.
