Amanda Serrano pulls out of World title rematch with Katie Taylor
After sustaining an injury in training, Amanda Serrano has pulled out of scheduled rematch with Katie Taylor in Dublin.
It looks like the much-anticipated rematch between Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor will keep fans waiting just a little bit longer after the Puerto Rican fighter had to postpone due to an injury sustained in training camp.
The clash follows their first sold-out meeting in New York’s Madison Square Garden, the first female bout to headline at the legendary venue. In that meeting, Taylor outpointed Serrano in a thrilling split decision to remain undefeated.
Scheduled to take place on May 20th, this was to be Taylor’s homecoming, since the Irishwoman has had to fight her entire career in either the UK or US, and the fan interest in seeing the rematch has been palpable.
In announcing the postponement, Taylor’s promoter Matchroom Boxing said that “the teams are in discussions about finding a revised date for the bout.” There is no mention of whether or not a May 20th homecoming fight will take place with another opponent, although there have been no shortage of offers. Fighters such as Mikaela Mayer, Heather Hardy, Estelle Mossley and Natasha Jonas have all been suggested as being able to take the fight, but there is no word as to whether this is on the cards.
The venue for the Dublin bout was to be the 13,000 seat 3Arena, although the fans are hopeful that the change to schedule will shunt the fight to the more popular 80,000 seat Croke Park. Promoter Eddie Hearn is against the change of venue, citing the expense of the GAA headquarters, but there is always a twinkle of hope in Irish eyes.
