Update:

Jannik Sinner is the 2026 Wimbledon champion for the second year running, although many would argue his triumph in London was made more straightforward by the ongoing absence of Carlos Alcaraz from tennis.

Sinner and Alcaraz have undeniably been the two biggest stars in men’s tennis in recent years, with their respectful rivalry allowing them to push each other to new heights.

Alcaraz’s injury continues to keep him sidelined

However, we have been deprived of seeing them face off in a Grand Slam this year, mostly due to a wrist injury suffered by the Spaniard at the Barcelona Open in mid-April.

Alcaraz has missed the French Open and Wimbledon because of an inflamed tendon sheath in his right wrist, with reports suggesting he has suffered several setbacks in his rehab, causing his recovery to progress more slowly than expected.

The 23-year-old recently withdrew from the Canadian Open, which begins on August 3, four weeks before the 2026 US Open gets underway on August 31.

US Open participation in doubt

Alcaraz shared a video of himself returning to light training on July 9, although most viewers in the know, including Boris Becker, believe he is “still far off” returning to competitive action.

According to Tennis365, Alcaraz is now in serious danger of being unable to defend the title he won at Flushing Meadows in New York last year, although nothing has been confirmed.
