The Mexican extended the fight to 12 rounds, enduring his rival quite well. With this win, the North American is the new category champion.

The Fight summary

It mainly was the expected result. The favorite on paper, Jesse Rodríguez, took the stellar fight against Cristian González in a bout held at the Boeing Center at Tech Port, San Antonio (USA).

On the cards, ‘Bam’ lost three rounds, at times when even ‘Chicharito’ was not the clear dominator of the fight. Thanks to this result, Jesse Rodríguez is the WBO featherweight champion, a victory to extend his undefeated record to 18 wins, with 11 KOs in between—an excellent outcome for the North-American boxer.

Jesse Bam Rodríguez defeated Cristian González by unanimous decision, with scores of 118-110, 117-111, and 116-112 in his favor.

It was not an easy fight for the now two-time world champion Rodríguez, who from the first round knew how González would make him work, although he later took most of the first half of the fight. After González connected a few combinations in the sixth round, Bam suffered a little, and he was shaken almost close to a knockdown. From there, he began to look much less aggressive, resisting until he was sure the umpire cards would recognize him as the winner.

It was too late for Cristian González to do anything, as Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez worked out his strategy and defended sufficiently up in the late rounds to get to the final bell. There is enormous respect for Gonzalez for producing the fight exciting and making Rodríguez suffer at some moments. He indeed made the fight into a title-winning opportunity, but Rodriguez’s strength and ring leadership was enough to win this fight. Everybody at the Being Center saw an early match dominating Rodriguez, who did early enough to win it late.
