Why do they call Jorge Masvidal ‘Gamebred’? What does the nickname mean?
The explanation behind the nickname of the controversial American professional mixed martial artist competing in the UFC’s Welterweight division.
Jorge Masvidal has been in professional circles since 2003 and contested the Bellator, Strikeforce, Shark Fights, and World Victory Road championship belts before signing with UFC. Masvidal still holds the record for the fastest knockout in UFC history at five seconds over Ben Askren and won the symbolic UFC “BMF” Championship belt over Nate Diaz. As of January 4, 2023, he is #17 in the UFC welterweight rankings.

He was born and raised in Miami to a Cuban father and a Peruvian mother. Masvidal was frequently involved in street fighting from a young age. Masvidal competed in wrestling at St. Brendan High School but fell to stay college eligible because of his grades. Subsequently began with karate training and mixed martial arts.
This 5′11″ and 170 lb fighter won his mixed martial arts debut by knockout on May 24, 2003, against Joe Lauzonat, current UFC competitor, via technical knockout in the second round of the HOOKnSHOOT: Absolute Fighting Championships 3.
Fighting record
In Jorge Masvidal’s professional record with the UFC, he had 51 fights, winning 35, 16 by knockout, two by submission, and 17 by the referees’ decision. In his 16 UFC career losses, he was taken down by a dish on two occasions, two times he was defeated by submission, and 12 times fell short after the referees’ decision.
‘Gamebred’ origins
Despite his popularity as a fighter and omnipresence in fight-oriented media, Jorge Masvidal protected his private life from the public eye. Little is known that he has an older brother John (Masvidal), who is also responsible for the best explanation of his brother’s nickname - ‘Gamebred.’

“Game means the ability to fight through pain and fatigue. It’s not about how high your skill levels are or if you’re good, bad, or a world champion. Bred is just; you have a pit bull and another pit bull – you bred a pit bull, you know?” said Masvidal.
