Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez has taken aim at forthcoming opponent Gennady Golovkin in an interview in his native Mexico, branding the Kazakh a “shitty person”.

Speaking to TV Azteca, Álvarez accused Golovkin of putting on a ‘nice guy’ act only in front of the cameras.

‘I don’t like two-faced people’

Golovkin is a shitty person, a hypocrite,” he said. “Ask people off-camera how he behaves. But when they turn the camera on he’s all Mr. Nice Guy and respectful. I don’t like two-faced people. If people call me a jerk that’s fine, but I am who I am, I don’t pretend to be something else.”

Álvarez, who faces Golovkin in the final chapter of their trilogy fight in Las Vegas on Saturday, Sept. 17, has spoken previously of his hatred for the 40-year-old, declaring that their bout in Nevada is personal.

Golovkin on Canelo

While Canelo has taken every opportunity to hit out at Golovkin, ‘GGG’ has kept a lower profile, but has also been critical of his rival.

Golovkin has compared Álvarez to a dog, suggested that his opponent’s constant attacks are a consequence of the consumption of performance-enhancing substances, and asserted that the judges unfairly favored the Mexican in the pair’s second fight.

After a split draw in their opening clash in September 2017, Álvarez was awarded a majority-decision win over Golovkin in a rematch a year later.

Last month, Golovkin said in an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal that a victory over Álvarez at the third attempt would be the “biggest win in my career”.
