Saúl Canelo Álvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) will defend his WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF super-middleweight titles against fellow countryman Jaime Munguía (43-0, 34 KOs) in Saturday’s top bill bout at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena.

Canelo Álvarez to defend his super-middleweight titles for the fourth time

Canelo, who at 33 is at the tail end of his boxing career, returns to the ring for the first time since September 2023 when he fended off Jermall Charlo to retain all of his super middleweight titles - the last of three challenges (Charlo, Gennady Golovkin and John Ryder) that all ended with the same outcome. So understandably, he starts out as the odds-on favorite at -525 with Munguía currently listed with bookmakers at +380.

It’s been almost exactly seven years since Álvarez last took on a Mexican rival. He defeated Julio César Chavez Jr. by unanimous decision in May 2017 and vowed not to fight another compatriot again but relented, agreeing to box former world champion Munguía, with both showing great respect to each other during this week’s weigh-in and press conference at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

I know I said I wouldn’t fight against another Mexican fighter,” Álvarez explained. “But someone respectful like Munguia, who earned this chance - fight after fight, giving his all... I’m glad that we could make happen. We respect each other but we’re here to fight and give everything we’ve got. I hope everyone enjoys it, and it turns out to be a great fiesta for Mexico”.

Canelo’s bout with Munguia tops the bill on a fight card which features three other fights at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
