Canelo says he will retire if Ryder defeats him

The Mexican star, who is fighting John Ryder on Saturday night, has said he will hang up the gloves if the Brit manages to beat him.

Everything is ready in Canelo’s native Guadalajara for the boxer’s return to his homeland after more than a decade without fighting in Mexico.

The undisputed super middleweight champion wants to offer all his fans expected at Estadio Akron another win on the Cinco de Mayo weekend.

A victory that would allow Álvarez to plan big fights again, especially against Dmitry Bivol, his main objective since he lost to the undefeated Russian one year ago when he stepped up to 175 lbs.

Álvarez will also be looking to record a dominant win against the London native, as he has been recently criticized after his latest performances against Gennady Golovin and Bivol.

Some, like David Benavidez’s father, Jose, have even gone beyond and have stated that Álvarez is not the same fighter anymore, seeing a decline in the 32-year-old champion.

‘Canelo’ says he will retire if he loses to Ryder

If the unexpected happens and Ryder pulls off the upset, Canelo’s future will be very different.

Eddy Reynoso’s pupil admitted that if things don’t go as expected and the Brit proves to be the better man on Saturday night, he will retire.

If John Ryder beats me, I’m done,” said Canelo to DAZN Boxing.

“I just want to continue my history, with the big fights out there, and right now my short-term goal is the right with Dmitry Bivol, and then we’ll see”, Canelo said when asked about his plans.

I don’t want to be too confident because they said the same thing about Dmitry Bivol [being the underdog in the fight], and look what happened. So, I train 100% for the good fighter out there. As I said, if I lose to John Ryder, then I’m done”, he concluded.

If the Mexican fighter loses, fans won’t be able to see big fights between the Mexican star and other top boxers like David Benavidez, Jermall Charlo, David Morrell Jr, Artur Beterbiev, and, as previously mentioned, a rematch with Bivol.
