Carlos Alcaraz, who is expected to make his debut on Tuesday at the Monte Carlo Masters 1000, made it clear on Monday that he’s not thinking about defending last year’s title — or the 1,000 ranking points that come with it.

Coming in as the defending champion doesn’t change anything, to be honest,” Alcaraz told reporters. “I’m not thinking about defending a title. It’s a new year, new feelings, things to improve… I’m just trying to feel good out there.”

His opening match could come against a familiar and formidable name: Stan Wawrinka, the three‑time Grand Slam champion. The Swiss veteran must first get past Argentina’s Sebastián Báez in the first round. Wawrinka recently praised Alcaraz, saying the Spaniard is “taking tennis to another dimension.” Alcaraz returned the compliment: “I’d love to play him here.”

Clay season begins — and Alcaraz is ready

Monte Carlo marks Alcaraz’s first stop on clay this season. Last year, the surface brought out his best tennis: he won Monte Carlo, Rome, and Roland Garros, and reached the final in Barcelona.

It’s probably one of my best surfaces, no doubt,” he said. “I miss clay when the season ends, so the wait felt endless. Now it’s time to get the socks dirty again!”
