Carlos Alcaraz defeats Matteo Arnaldi: who will the Spaniard play in the quarter-finals of 2023 US Open?

The Wimbledon champion wasted little time in seeing off the Italian and joins Novak Djokovic in the last eight.

Carlos Alcaraz is in red-hot form as his bids to win a second Grand Slam in a row after lifting his first Wimbledon trophy in July, and a second consecutive US Open following his triumph at Flushing Meadows in 2022. The Spaniard swept aside unseeded Italian Matteo Arnaldi in the fourth round to join Novak Djokovic and American trio Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton in the quarter-finals.

Alcaraz broken just once in straight sets win

The world number one wasted relatively little time in dispatching Arnaldi, ranked 61st, taking just under two hours to post a straightforward 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 victory at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The 20 year-old lost serve just once in the match - in the final set - but broke back immediately before going on to close out a comfortable win with minimum fuss.

Wimbledon champion equals Agassi achievement

Alcaraz has now made it to the quarter-finals in New York in each of his three appearances at the US Open, becoming the only male player apart from Andre Agassi to reach that stage of the tournament three times before the age of 21. The reigning champion has also become the first man to make it as far as the last eight in his first three participations since Johan Kriek (1978-1980).

Next up is a match against number 12 seed Alexander Zverez, who defeated sixth-ranked Jannik Sinner on Monday, The last-eight clash against Alcaraz will be played on Wednesday 6 September (time still to be confirmed).
