David Benavidez plans to move up to 175
‘The Mexican Monster’ said he’s only interested in fighting at 168 if it’s against Canelo Álvarez and David Morrell.
David Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs) put the super middleweight division on notice by defeating Demetrius Andrade (32-1, 19 KOs) via TKO in his last fight and declared he wants to face Saúl Canelo Álvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) to give boxing fans what they want.
However, Benavidez stated that he’s planning on leaving the super middleweight division (169 lbs) to move up to the light heavyweight category (175 lbs) shortly.
“I will move up to 175 soon”, the interim WBC super middleweight champion said to ESNEWS.
“I have been in this division for a long time and I believe I’m close to making something huge at 168 so I will stay in this division for a while but I will move up to 175 after that”, he added.
Benavidez’s career has been taking place between the 160 and the 180 lbs. His second pro bout against Edgar Galvan in Tijuana, Mexico, took place at cruiserweight, and El Bandera Roja was victorious in the very first round.
Benavidez doesn’t rule out facing David Morrell
The two-time world champion is only interested in two fights in the super middleweight division: Canelo Alvarez and David Morrell. The Mexican is the division’s undisputed champion, while the Cuban boxer is the WBA titleholder.
“I could definitely fight Morrell, it would be a great fight too”, he admitted. “After Demetrius Andrade, Morrell and Canelo are the only fights I’m interested in”.
There are other good boxers in the super middleweight division, like the Cuban Osleys Iglesias, the IBO Super Middleweight Champion; Uwel Hernandez, the WBA Gold World titleholder, and the Uzbek Bektemir Melikuziev, who possesses the WBO Global super-middleweight title.
