Davis vs Lomachenko: will it happen or is it off?

The negotiations between both fighters were on hold, due to the Ukrainian’s lack of motivation, but there have been recent updates on their potential fight.

The negotiations between both fighters were on hold, due to the Ukrainian’s lack of motivation, but there have been recent updates on their potential fight.

Gervonta Davis vs Vasiliy Lomachenko. That’s the fight everyone wants to see, as both men have very different styles and are top fighters.

However, negotiations for a potential showdown at the end of the year haven’t been as easy as expected and as recently reported on AS USA, the reason why both fighters didn’t get to an agreement is because the Ukrainian isn’t motivated enough to step into the ring again, at least shortly.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist last defeated George Kambosos Jr. in Perth, Australia, last May in a fight he outclassed his opponent and showed some of his impressive boxing skills, making the referee stop the fight in the 11th round.

Despite the current situation of his homeland, Ukraine, the current IBF lightweight champion seemed to be extra motivated to get into the ring and fight and perform on the other side of the world, in Kambosos Jr.’s territory, which didn’t affect him.

However, things seem to have changed this time and both sides haven’t been able to get to a deal to make their clash happen.

Is the Davis vs Lomachenko boxing match off?

As for now, Gervonta Davis won’t fight Vasiliy Lomachenko, at least not in 2024. November was the scheduled month for the mega-fight to happen in a two-belt unification, but the American will have to find another opponent unless the situation completely changes and Loma decides to return this year.

The information about The Matrix taking a break for the rest of the year was confirmed by an official from PBC, as reported by ESPN.

While it seems Loma won’t fight Tank this year, the Ukrainian hasn’t said if he will want to take on the American in 2025 either, so the undefeated champion will have to look for other names to stay active.

Some fans believe Lomachenko’s decision is influenced by the war in his country, while others think he’s ducking Davis and looking for a getaway to avoid the Baltimore native.

Davis vs Stevenson next?

After the disappointing news of Davis and Lomachenko not finding an agreement to fight, many combat sports fans are wondering who Davis will fight now.

There’s a list of some interesting boxers that would certainly give Tank a good fight, but who will be the chosen one to face him?

Davis admitted after beating Frank Martin in June he wants to stay active for the remainder of the year, as he felt a little rusty against The Ghost.

Shakur Stevenson is the name that clearly stands out of the candidates’ list, as he’s regarded as the only boxer with a real chance of defeating him by many boxing pundits.

Stevenson is a former three-division world champion and a 2016 Olympic silver medalist, and nobody has been able to defeat him so far.

Meanwhile, the Mexican William Zepeda would also be a good opponent. El Camaron, like Davis, is undefeated, and his aggressive and relentless boxing style would be very attractive with Tank’s explosive way of fighting.

The third possibility is the tough Isaac Cruz. The WBA super lightweight champion has to fight Jose Valenzuela in August, but if he comes out on top, he’s a solid option for a rematch with Davis. Both men already shared the ring in 2021, and Cruz gave Gervonta his toughest fight to date, so another clash between both men could be interesting to see how Davis would perform against the same rival.
