Oscar De la Hoya took the time to explain what happened and to unleash a poisonous dart against Canelo before this Saturday’s fight against Munguía.

During the press conference to announce the Cinco de Mayo bout between Canelo Álvarez and Jaime Munguía, one of the moments that stuck out to the press was the tense atmosphere between Canelo and his former promoter Óscar De La Hoya, who now represents Munguía.

De la Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions represented Canelo Álvarez for a decade, Canelo’s career skyrocketed, taking him from a decent Mexican fighter to becoming the face of professional boxing.

Why did Canelo's relationship with De la Hoya break up?

De la Hoya claims that he feels that a big reason for the enmity between him and Canelo Álvarez that led to their breakup was comments that the Golden Boy made about Canelo’s coach Eddy Reynoso.

“One day a reporter asked me if I thought Canelo needed another coach, and I answered the reporter that maybe it was a good idea, because I had seven coaches in my career and I learned things from each coach, everyone taught me something new. I told him that maybe Eddy Reynoso could have received some help.

De La Hoya says that these statements created discord between he and Canelo and de la Hoya was accused of being disloyal. This last comment came with a shrug and a sting, as de la Hoya posed the rhetorical question of how Canelo can speak of loyalty when he constantly changes promoters and partners.

“How can someone who jumps from promoter to promoter, from contract to contract, from television station to television station talk about loyalty. Who is the disloyal one here?”
