Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr. have never been friends. Since their fight was scheduled in 2007, both men started attacking and thrashing each other in interviews and pre-fight pressers and although they respect each other’s talents, there’s still some distance between them.

The winner of 11 world titles in six weight classes is one of the most known promoters in boxing, while Mayweather Jr. has dedicated his life to traveling, enjoying life, and making money with exhibition bouts after he hung up the gloves as a pro.

Both men are known to be one of the very best boxers of their generation and for some great performances that made them world champions and renowned fighters around the globe.

De La Hoya blasts Mayweather’s exhibition fights

After recording his 50th win as a professional against Conor McGregor in 2017, Mayweather Jr. has been seen training in the gym regularly, but also traveling and enjoying his fortune.

However, he admitted he missed the competition and found a way of generating more money as a retired fighter by competing in exhibition bouts. The Michigan boxer fought a couple of times against John Gotti III with their first clash ending in a brawl and the second clash going the distance without an official score.

Besides those exhibition events, Mayweather Jr. also took on social media celebrity Logan Paul, fighter and reality TV star Aaron Chalmers, and renowned Japanese fighters Mikuru Asakura and Tenshin Nasukawa.

De La Hoya is not a big fan of these fights and sent a message to Mayweather Jr. letting him know on his Instagram account.

“In the middle of the second round [of the Gotti fight], Floyd literally had the referee swapped out”, he said on a video. “He didn’t like that the referee told him to stop hitting behind the head. Floyd is used to having the refs do whatever he wants and he wasn’t getting his way this time. It was so embarrassing”m he added.

“Floyd, you’re 50 years old. You’re a legend in this sport. I’ve stood up for you in countless interviews, including Shannon Sharpe’s podcast last week. But you have to stop embarrassing yourself with these exhibitions. I know life is hard, I know life is expensive, but come on, put your legacy first. Nobody wants to remember you like this”, he continued.

De La Hoya also mentioned Mayweather’s recent legal problems, as the former world champion was sued by a Miami jeweler, who alleges that Mayweather Jr. owes him money.
