Experts unimpressed with Freedom 250: “The UFC promised us the moon and then delivered a pretty cool rock”
What was billed as the biggest event in UFC history is finally here, but not everyone is convinced the promotion has delivered on its promises.

UFC Freedom 250 will take place on the South Lawn of the White House on Sunday, June 14 as part of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. The event has been months in the making, with UFC CEO Dana White repeatedly teasing a card unlike anything fans had seen before.
The unique setting alone guarantees a place in combat sports history. A custom-built arena has been erected on White House grounds, and the card will be watched by millions around the world. Yet despite the unprecedented venue, some analysts believe the fights themselves have failed to match the enormous expectations created by the UFC.
Freedom 250, a “victim of its own hype”
Among the most prominent critics is Yahoo Sports columnist Ben Fowlkes, who argued that the promotion has become “a victim of its own hype.”
In an article titled After all the hype, the UFC White House fight card feels like just another event, Fowlkes acknowledged that the lineup is strong on paper. The card is headlined by a lightweight title unification bout between champion Ilia Topuria and interim champion Justin Gaethje, while Alex Pereira faces Ciryl Gane for an interim heavyweight title.

The problem, according to Fowlkes, is not the quality of the card but the expectations surrounding it.
“It would be a solid offering as a regular numbered UFC event,” he wrote. “But after you spent months promising us the greatest UFC event of all time? Yeah, this isn’t that.”
Fowlkes argued that months of speculation led fans to believe Freedom 250 would feature a collection of dream fights and blockbuster matchups unlike anything previously assembled by the promotion. Instead, he believes the final product resembles a typical high-end pay-per-view event.
“The UFC promised us the moon and then delivered a pretty cool rock,” Fowlkes wrote. “We’ve endured months of speculation. Months of fighters volunteering and outright begging for a spot on the card. Months of fans and media doing their own fantasy matchmaking.”
Among his criticisms was the absence of the type of super-fights many fans expected after such an extensive promotional campaign. While Topuria vs. Gaethje generated significant interest, Fowlkes questioned whether other matchups on the card justified the historic setting.
He ultimately concluded that the White House itself may have become the main attraction.
“The setting of the event will be historic enough, so the lineup doesn’t have to add too much,” he wrote.
Whether that calculation proves correct will become clear once the fights begin. Freedom 250 remains one of the most ambitious events the UFC has ever staged. The debate now centers on whether the spectacle outside the cage has overshadowed what is happening inside it.
