Explicit images and footage leak of university volleyball team under investigation
Police in Wisconsin are investigating after the leak was reported, a ‘wrongful invasion of the student-athletes’ privacy’.
Following the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s volleyball team winning the 2021 Big 10 championship last November, photos and video footage was captured during the celebrations. This included explicit images and footage which was not intended to be circulated to the wider public. UW Athletics have now confirmed that they aware of these photos and videos being shared via digital media and are investigating, with the police since getting involved.
UW Athletics statement over leaked volleyball images
The organisation released the following statement:
‘We are aware that private photos and video of UW volleyball student-athletes that were never intended to be shared publicly are being circulated digitally. The unauthorized sharing is a significant and wrongful invasion of the student-athletes’ privacy, including potential violations of university policies and criminal statutes. When the student-athletes became aware of the circulating photos, they contacted the UW-Madison Police Department.
‘UWPD is investigating multiple crimes, including sharing sensitive photos without consent. UWPD is not investigating the volleyball student-athletes for wrongdoing in this matter. Our top priority is supporting our student-athletes and we are providing them with the appropriate services and resources.’
