Golf threesome: U.S. Senior Open, PGA Travelers and KPMG Women’s PGA Championship
Golf’s top women, men and senior players will be competing this weekend amidst the latest news surrounding the LIV Invitational Series and newly announced changes to the PGA calendar and prize money.
The U.S. Senior Open, the PGA Travelers and the KPMG Women’s PGA championships all kick off on Thursday to keep golf fans riding high after last week’s US Open at Brookline. The seniors will tee off at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, PA, the men are playing at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut and the world’s best women golfers will be competing this weekend at the Congressional Blue Course in Bethesda, Maryland.
2022 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship
The big news prior to Thursday’s start for those competing in Maryland is that the purse has been doubled from last year in an attempt to get the women’s prize money closer to that of their male counterparts. The winner this year will take home $1.35 million in prize money.
“This is a very big day for the LPGA, women’s golf, and women’s sports. We look forward to working with KPMG and the PGA of America to continue using our platform to empower young women and inspire positive change in the world,” said Mollie Marcoux Samaan, LPGA commissioner, in a statement.
Defending champion Nelly Korda, world no. 1 Jin Young Ko and Anna Nordqvist join a competitive field of 156 golfers who will compete at the Congressional Country Club, a course that has hosted U.S. Opens, PGA Championships and several PGA Tour events.
“It’s just the slopes and the fairways. Keeping the ball on the greens, the slopes on the greens. There’s a lot of different challenges. It’s not just one thing,” LPGA veteran Stacy Lewis said.
Travelers Championship
Despite late withdrawals by Will Zalatoris and Justin Thomas (unrelated to the LIV series), the field for the Travelers Championship will feature some of the top players in the Official World Golf Ranking, such as Scottie Scheffler, the no. 1-ranked player in the world and winner of four PGA Tour events this season, as well as Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Patrick Cantlay.
The field of 156 players includes eight past Travelers Championship winners such as Harris English, Jordan Spieth, Kevin Streelman and Stewart Cink. You can watch the tournament live on the Golf Channel (3–6 p.m. Thursday and Friday; 1–3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday) and on CBS (3–6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday).
LIV Golf Invitation series players Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson will not compete at the Travelers Championship as they prepare for the second LIV tournament in Portland scheduled for June 30.
U.S. Senior Open
The US Senior Open Championship will be held at the Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The course (Par 71, 7,208 yards) celebrates 100 years and hosts the US Senior Open for the third time.
Padraig Harrington, Paul Goydos, Steve Stricker, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Jerry Kelly and Retief Goosen are some of the top names of a field of 156 players who will compete at the Old Course from Thursday to Sunday. The top 60 and ties will play the final two rounds. Jim Furyk pocketed $720,000 for his victory at Omaha Country Club last year.
