Golf’s elite battle for big bucks at the 2025 Dunhill Links Championship

Robert MacIntyre, Tyrell Hatton, Matt Fitzpatrick and Billy Horschel will battle for the top prize at St. Andrews, with a big prize purse on offer.

The 2025 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship got underway on Thursday with several players fresh from Team Europe’s recent Ryder Cup triumph out in the crisp fresh air on the Old Course at St. Andrews, Kingsbarns and Carnoustie.

Among them, Tyrell Hatton, the defending champion who is focusing on a record fourth title, 2023 winner Matt Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood and local lad Robert MacIntyre who would love nothing better than to lift the trophy on home soil.

Also in Scotland for the DP World Tour event are LIV Golf stars Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed and Bubba Watson.

Among the celebrities taking part this year are: Huey Lewis, Andy Murray, Bill Murray, Mike Rutherford and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Three players shared pole position on the leaderboard after the opening day: Darius van Drier, Ryan Brehm and Matthew Jordan, who finished nine under after the first 18 holes, one shot ahead of Dustin Johnson, Jeff Winther and Jacob Skov Olesen.

What is the prize fund for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship?

The Alfred Dunhill Links competition is divided into two parts, a professional and an amateur tournament. The amateur version - the Team Championship - sees the 168 professionals paired with 168 amateurs, typically well-known celebrities.

The total prize pot for 2024 is worth $5 million, with $4.8 million going to the professional tournament. The remaining $200,000 prize money is doled out to the winners of the Team Championship, but only the professional golfers will take home the cash.

The winner of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship will receive a first prize of $816,000. Behind that, the second prize is $528,000 and third prize is $302,400.

2025 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship format

The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship is the longest-running competition on the PGA European Tour and always brings together many of the world’s top players.

The action is spread over three different courses: the Old Course at St Andrews, Carnoustie Golf Links and Kingsbarns Golf Links, in Fife, Scotland with 168 of the world’s top players taking part. After three rounds the field is cut and just 60 players will remain for the final round on Sunday.
