Greta Myers, U.S. Olympic speedskater, on why she enjoys knitting as a hobby: “It’s been very therapeutic for me”
The 21-year-old likes to unwind between events by sitting down with her wool and crochet needles. She knitted a snazzy tote bag for her mom.
Apart from the pressures of competing, Olympians have to find ways of staying focused and simultaneously disconnect between events. It’s even more important if you are competing at your first Olympics Games like US speedskater Greta Myers.
The 21-year-old who hails from from Lino Lakes, Minnesota is representing Team USA in five events at Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo. Greta made her Olympic debut in the 3000 meters and just missed out on a medal in the team pursuit.
An Olympic tote bag for mom
And when she is no out on the ice, Greta escapes from it all with a relaxing hobby - crochet. She showed off one of her latest creations after the Olympic trials at the start of the year. In an Instagram post, Greta shared the result - a stylish Olympic tote bag with the American flag in the shape of a heart. She explained that she took a few liberties with the design of the bag, which she knitted especially for her mom to carry while cheering her on at her first Olympic Games.
“It’s been very therapeutic for me. It’s given me a good outlet outside of skating that I can just funnel my attention to,” Greta told HuffPost. “You have to trust the process, and you have to accept sometimes it’s not going to turn out perfect.”
Greta’s mom will be carrying her Olympic tote bag with pride as she watches her daughter take part in the women’s 1500 meters event today.
