Abdi Nageeye and Sheila Chepkirui made history on Sunday by claiming victory in the men’s and women’s categories of the New York Marathon, respectively, in two thrilling races decided in the final meters.
What is the prize money for winning NYC Marathon?
The New York Marathon applies a gender equality policy in its prize distribution, so both Nageeye and Chepkirui will each receive $100,000 as winners of the New York race.
Despite narrowly missing the win, Kenyans Evans Chebet and Hellen Obiri will each receive a prize of $60,000 as runners-up, while those who finished third will receive $40,000.
Financial prizes for NYC Top 10
Athletes who finished in the top 10 in the professional category will also receive awards for their performance: fourth place earns $25,000; fifth, $15,000; sixth, $10,000; seventh, $7,500; eighth, $5,000; ninth, $2,500; and tenth, $2,000.
