The World Athletics Championships are the largest event in track and field, and this year, almost 2,000 competitors from 192 countries are in Eugene, Oregon, to win medals, set records, and earn some prize money to boot. It’s the first time the United States is hosting the Championships, and the action is taking place at Hayward Field.

Bigger prizes for 2022 World Athletics Championships winners

Participants in Oregon22 will be competing for a bigger amount than usual, thanks to a commitment by World Athletics to increase the pot for winning athletes. A total of almost $8.5 million is up for grabs this year.

The organization has set aside $2 million from fines paid by the Russian Athletics Federation for violating rules on doping, to add to the prize money for the Oregon Championships as well as WCH Budapest 23.

Aside from this, there will be an extra incentive for athletes to set new records, as Japanese electronics company TDK is handing out $100,000 to gold medal winners who break an IAAF World Record in the process.

Those who make the top eight in each event will win a cash prize. Individual winners receive the same amount, regardless of which event they participate in. Relay winners are awarded prize money per team.
