How much money do the US Open tennis winners get? Paychecks for men’s and women’s singles champions

The US Open, the last major tournament of the 2024 tennis calendar, reaches its conclusion this weekend at Flushing Meadows with new names set to join both the men’s and women’s lists of singles champions.

Aryna Sabalenka, who lost last year’s final to Coco Gauff, has a second shot at the title. In her way will be Jessica Pegula, playing the first Grand Slam final of her career. Making it to the quarter final of the 2022 edition was the furthest that the 30-year-old American had reached in 12 appearances at the US Open.

She will be hoping to put the seal on a year which saw her clinch her second consecutive Canadian Open title and move up the WTA rankings, where she currently occupies sixth position.

The men’s event will also have a new winner this year. Defending champion Novak Djokovic was looking to secure a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title but bowed out at the Third Round losing 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to Alexei Popyrin.

World No.1 Jannick Sinner who started the tournament immersed in a doping scandal, will take on Taylor Fritz. Like Pegula, this will be Fritz’s first appearance in a Grand Slam final. His victory over Rafa Nadal in the 2022 Indian Wells has been the high point of his career so far. He is currently No.12 in the world ranking.

Sinner eyeing second Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows

Prior to the tournament, Sinner was among the favorites but a double positive test for clostebol almost scuppered his chances of taking part at all. The Italian clinched his first Grand Slam at the start of the year, beating Daniil Medvedev 3–6, 3–6, 6–4, 6–4, 6–3 at the Australian Open.

As for the women, Aryna Sabalenka, fresh from her triumph at the Cincinnati Open, started out as the player to beat. With world No.1 Iga Swiatek, and last year’s winner Coco Gauff, both falling by the wayside in earlier rounds, the Belarusian is the big favorite to claim her third singles Grand Slam.

The year started off well for Sabalenka who beat China’s Zheng Qinwen 6-3, 6-2 in the Australian Open but niggling back issues had an impact on her progression in other major events - and saw her withdraw from Wimbledon. She has racked up a total of $24,761,708 in prize money during her career and will add to that by reaching the US Open final for the second year running.

2024 US Open prize money and ranking points

Of all the major tournaments, the US Open offers the best financial rewards. This year, the total cash pot has increased by 15 percent on last year to $75 million. The singles champions will pocket a cash prize of $3.6 million plus 2000 ranking points while the finalists will receive $1.8 million plus 1,300 points.

This year’s prize money is a substantial increase on last year when Djokovic and Gauff both won $3 million with doubles winners: Rajeev Ram/Joe Salisbury and Gabriela Dabrowski / Erin Routliffe receiving $700,000.

The women’s singles final will be played on Saturday 7 September with the men’s final, the following day, Sunday, 8 September. ESPN hold exclusive broadcasting rights to the US Open and will be presenting the tournament for the 16th consecutive year, providing live coverage across its various platforms ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC.

This year, the men’s championship will be televised live on ABC for the first time ever. Daily preview shows will be available through the Tennis Channel while Eurosport will be broadcasting the event to 49 countries in mainland Europe; Sky Sports will over coverage in the UK and Ireland, Telefónica in Spain, SuperTennis in Italy and SportDeutschland in Germany.
