How much money will Teófimo López and Steve Claggett make for their fight in Miami?

Almost five months after beating Jamaine Ortiz, WBO light welterweight champion Teófimo López goes up against underdog Steve Claggett this weekend.

Teófimo López could be in line for a payout of up to $5 million this weekend, as the boxer seeks to successfully defend his WBO light welterweight title for a second time.

López, who has been light welterweight champion since defeating Josh Taylor by unanimous decision a year ago, faces Canadian Steve Claggett at Miami Beach’s James L. Knight Center today. The clash comes nearly five months after the 26-year-old claimed a unanimous-decision victory over Jamaine Ortiz in his first title defence, at Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.

How much is the López vs Claggett fight purse?

According to the specialist sport-finance website Sporty Salaries, López will pocket a guaranteed fee of $1.5 million for his fight with Claggett, with an extra $3.5 million up for grabs depending on television revenue. Claggett, meanwhile, is reported to be in line for a guaranteed $500,000, rising to a potential $1.5 million.

The López vs Claggett fight card is set to begin around 10pm ET/7pm PT, with the main event due to get going at around midnight ET/9pm PT. Viewers in the United States will be able to watch the action on ESPN+.

López is the heavy favourite for victory in Florida. Per Oddschecker, a win for the Brooklyn native - who has a 20-1 record as a professional boxer - is priced at -900. Claggett, meanwhile, is valued at +600 for an unexpected triumph. The 35-year-old has a record of 38 wins, seven defeats and two draws.

Since going down to a split-decision defeat to George Kambosos Jr in a 2021 lightweight fight, López has won his last four bouts. Claggett heads to Miami Beach on a run of nine victories. Most recently, he beat Marcos González Barraza when the Mexican retired in the second round of their match-up in Montreal in January.
