The world of golf watched one of the sport’s most unusual and groundbreaking events: the Crypto.com Showdown, at the Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas, where Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy walked away with the top prize.

Who played in Crypto.com Showdown?

This event marked the first televised matchup between golfers from the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. Representing the PGA Tour was Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, while Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau competed on behalf of the Saudi-backed circuit.

The Showdown prize money

The tournament’s standout feature is not the money but the way the champions will receive their prize money, with a “multimillion-dollar” amount being delivered... in cryptocurrency! This is a novel approach, with $10 million being the figure bandied about, as prizes are rarely awarded in digital assets.

Our understanding is that as well as the winning prize money, all four contenders will also receive a tidy $4 million just for making an appearance. (Is there any more appropriate sport for ‘green’ washing?)

Regarding the prize, it’s worth noting that Steve Kaliforwitz, Chief Marketing Officer of Crypto.com, confirmed that the golfers are not obligated to hold onto the cryptocurrency – they can sell or exchange it if they choose.
