In this year’s third major, Fowler and Scheffler were knocked out of the competition early due to mistakes, leaving a two-man battle between Clark and McIlroy, a four-time major winner.

Clark, aged 29, had made the cut in two majors before this week, but his confidence grew after securing his first PGA Tour victory at the Wells Fargo Championship five weeks ago. He entered the competition with confidence, reflected in his performance over the final 18 holes. Clark’s victory made him only the fourth player in the past 100 years to win the US Open on their first attempt after making the cut in the tournament, according to the Elias Sports Bureau—the most recent player to achieve this feat before Clark was Lucas Glover in 2009.

During his even-par round at the Los Angeles Country Club, Rory McIlroy played great and made few errors. However, like his performance at St. Andrews last year, he failed to take advantage of the limited opportunities.

Clark won his first major championship in a thrilling finish, edging out McIlroy by a single stroke. McIlroy, a four-time major champion, had to settle for second place. Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler secured third place. Clark finished with a score of -10, with McIlroy close behind at -9 and Scheffler at -7. Tied for fourth place were Fowler and Cameron Smith at -6, followed by Tommy Fleetwood and Min Woo Lee at -5.

The 29-year-old golfer for winning his first major title at the 2023 US Open held at Los Angeles Country Club, earned a prize of $3.6 million after securing a one-shot victory over the runner-up, Rory McIlroy, who received $2.16 million as a consolation prize. Scottie Scheffler secured a solo third position with a score of 7 under and crossed the seven-figure mark with his payday of $1,413,430.
