The second women’s major golf championship of the year gets underway on Thursday 30 May, with the 2024 US Women’s Open taking place at Lancaster Country Club in Pennsylvania, which previously hosted the event in 2015.

Unlike in the men’s game, the women have had five majors to compete for since 2013, with Women’s PGA Championship (20-23 June), the Evian Championship (11-14 July) and the Women’s Open (22-25 August) all to follow this summer.

Nelly Korda was the winner of the first major of the year at the Chevron Championship in April, which will come as a surprise to nobody who has followed women’s golf recently. After tying for 16th at her first tournament in 2024, the Florida native has won on five of her last six starts, the last of which came at the Mizuho Americas Open two weeks ago.

Korda will be going in search of her third major victory after also triumphing at the Women’s PGA Championship in 2021. In addition to the world number one, all eyes will be on Lexi Thompson, who will be taking part in the event for the last time after surprisingly announcing on Tuesday she will be retiring from golf at the end of the 2024 at the age of 29.

2024 US Women’s Open prize money: winner and total purse

As a result of her recent form, Korda is the red-hot favourite to continue her winning streak this week and collect the $2 million first prize, which comes from a total prize purse of $12 million (up $1 million from last year, although the winner’s amount remains the same). That makes the event the most lucrative on the LPGA Tour this year.

For context, the winner of the men’s RBC Canadian Open, which will be played at the same time, will pick up $1.69 million from a total purse of $9 million.

The highest-paying event on the men’s PGA Tour is the Players Championship, the flagship event. 2024 winner Scottie Scheffler took home $4.5 million of the total prize purse of $25 million.
