The 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge tees off on Thursday, 23 May with a number of world’s top players in contention.

The Colonial National Invitation, currently known as the Charles Schwab for sponsorship reasons, is one of the five invitational events on the PGA Tour. The first edition was held in 1946 and it remains an ever-present on the PGA Tour.

This year’s competition has a total purse of $9,100,000, with the winning golfer taking home $1,630,000 as top prize. Here’s a look at the prize money break-down for the top ten finishers at the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge...

PositionWinnings
1st$1,638,000
2nd$991,900
3rd$627,900
4th$445,900
5th$373,100
6th$329,875
7th$307,125
8th$284,375
9th$266,175
10th$247,975

The competition’s ‘invitational’ status means that it has a reduced field of around 120 players, while most full-field tournaments contain either 144 or 156 players. The other four invitational tournaments on the PGA Tour are the Genesis Open, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the RBC Heritage, and the Memorial Tournament.

Who is the favourite to win the Charles Schwab Challenge?

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is considered the outright favourite to bag the top prize in Fort Worth. He has won four of his five previous starts, including the 2024 Masters, but he has never previously won the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Scheffler is ranked as the world’s best but he made headlines for all the wrong reasons last week, arrested on charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic. The incident occurred at outside Valhalla Golf Club, the site of last week’s PGA Championship. Nevertheless, Scheffler is expected to compete in the Charles Schwab Challenge.

His most likely rivals for top prize are Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth and Max Homa. Of that trio, Morikawa is ranked the highest on the PGA Tour and he nearly triumphed at this competition in 2020, losing to Daniel Berger on a playoff.
