This will be the second time that Team Penske has achieved a front row hat trick at the celebrated Indianapolis race after completing a front trio back in 1988 with Rick Mears, Danny Sullivan and Al Unser all at the front of the grid with Mears eventually going onto win the race.

During Sunday’s qualification, the 30-year-old McLaughlin had an average speed of 234.220 miles per hour to take the pole.

“I have a lot of pride in getting it, I’m working hard. Indy hasn’t been good to me and a lot of that was my responsibility. I have to work and this is the first step,” said McLaughlin in statements provided by IndyCar.

Mexican Pato O’Ward (Arrow McLaren) will start from the third row, after an average of 232.584 miles per hour with the Indy 500 set to be staged next Sunday (26 May) at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Another fascinating element to the race is NASCAR Cup Series superstar Kyle Larson who is looking to complete an iconic double on Sunday, running as a rookie in his first Indy 500 before leaving for a 600-mile race in (coca Cola 600) Charlotte on Sunday night.
