Taylor and Serrano announced as co-main fight in Paul vs Tyson event
The YouTube celebrity and boxer Jake Paul revealed that both fighters will meet again more than two years later, with Serrano looking to avenge his loss.
July 20 promises to be a great night of action for combat sports fans. Jake Paul announced that Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano will finally have their rematch, which will take place as the co-main event of his much-anticipated clash with Mike Tyson, which will be aired on Netflix.
Taylor had been negotiating with Chantelle Cameron for a trilogy fight, but both sides weren’t able to reach an agreement and the Irish star was looking for an opponent. Now the former two-time Olympian will be featuring in a boxing card that promises to be one of the most exciting ones in 2024 and against a top fighter like Serrano.
Meanwhile, the Puerto Rican warrior was scheduled to step into the ring last month, but an eye issue just hours away from the fight forced her withdrawal.
Both women put on a show when they first met, with Taylor edging Serrano at New York’s Madison Square Garden via split decision in one of the best fights in the women’s category in recent years.
Taylor vs Serrano for all the marbles at super lightweight
Taylor and Serrano will be looking to offer the attendants and those who follow the fight on Netflix another fight to remember. Their first bout in 2022 was Sports Illustrated’s Fight of the Year and The Ring’s Event of the Year, so it looks like a win-win situation for Jake Paul in terms of audience, as it was already expected that the event would be a massive success only with his fight against Mike Tyson.
“So as you guys saw, my brother broke the news that he’s having a baby, so what better time for me to make an announcement of my own. Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano, the rematch, the co-main event of me vs Mike Tyson July 20, Dallas, Texas. This event just got bigger”, Paul said in a video posted on social media.
After the announcement was made, Taylor reacted to the addition of her fight with Serrano to the Paul-Tyson event.
“This is the rematch the world has wanted to see. The first fight in New York was obviously an epic occasion and it more than lived up to the billing, and I’m sure the rematch will be no different”, she said to BBC Sport.
Serrano couldn’t hide his reaction either. The 35-year-old boxer, who last defeated Danila Ramos in October, admitted that the announcement feels like a dream come true.
“I promised my fans they would see this rematch after we made history at MSG and it feels like a dream come true to know that Katie and I are finally making it happen on the biggest stage possible to show the world what elite women’s boxing is all about”.
Even Mike Tyson didn’t bite his tongue and welcomed the fight between the Irish and the Puerto Rican stars.
“Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano are two of the best boxers in the world. I know they can both put on an incredible show, and I’m thrilled to have them join this card”.
“These remarkable athletes will undoubtedly elevate the event with their global appeal and fan bases. Adding one of the greatest fights in women’s boxing history to this unforgettable event is a true gift to fans. Saturday, July 20 can’t get here soon enough.”, Tyson added.
The fight between the undisputed world champion Taylor and the seven-division world champion Serrano will be contested in 10 two-minute rounds.
