Jason Kelce’s Masters debut sparks backlash after awkward on-air moment
Former Eagles star Jason Kelce drew criticism from some viewers after his high-energy debut during ESPN’s Masters Par 3 Contest coverage.

Jason Kelce’s first appearance at The Masters definitely didn’t go unnoticed (he is not exactly a subtle human), but not everyone was a fan.
The former Philadelphia Eagles center made his debut as part of ESPN’s broadcast team during Wednesday’s Par 3 Contest at Augusta National Golf Club, bringing his trademark energy to one of golf’s most tradition-rich settings.
Almost immediately, the reaction from viewers was mixed, with some praising the personality he brought to the broadcast and others questioning whether it fit the tone of the event.
Not trying to be a stick in the mud, but I have zero need for Jason Kelce getting to cosplay as a reporter. I don’t have a need for the “sideline” reporter role in general but if you’re going to have someone, let’s not have it be some marketing shtick.

Kelce’s debut quickly draws attention - and backlash
Kelce’s introduction set the tone. Appearing in a caddie outfit, he unfolded a lawn chair on-air and spoke loudly as the Par 3 Contest unfolded behind him, an approach that stood out at an event typically known for its calm and quiet atmosphere.

The moment quickly made the rounds on social media, where some viewers were critical of the presentation.
“Jason Kelce just absolutely brutal in his first appearance at Augusta,” one user wrote, while another added: “Big fan of him, but this is the wrong energy for The Masters.”

Serious question, what does Jason Kelce have to do with the masters? https://t.co/Sqq1Gnx8Vr

I don’t mind Jason Kelce. He’s good vibes, and I appreciate good vibes. But we don’t need him at Augusta. https://t.co/wKBcCnvNSJ

I have enjoyed Jason Kelce during his playing days and even during his NFL analyst time, but holy hell it’s been insufferable to watch ever since ESPN decide to insert him in coverage of professional golf.

It’s got to stop. https://t.co/lTlUbzFfYz
Others went further, suggesting the broadcast should stick to a more traditional format during such a prestigious week in golf.
The Masters, particularly at Augusta National, is known for its strict traditions, quiet galleries and polished presentation. The Par 3 Contest, while more relaxed, still carries that same overall tone. Kelce, by contrast, has built his post-playing career on high-energy appearances, including his popular “New Heights” podcast and recent broadcasting work.

ESPN role and McAfee comparison
Kelce’s presence also drew attention because of who wasn’t there. Pat McAfee revealed that he and his show had attempted to be part of Masters coverage in previous years but were denied access.
“And for the people that are mad about Jason Kelce being a part of The Masters, I got a good piece of news for you,” McAfee said on his show. “They’ve told us to go to hell.”
The comparison only added to the conversation, with some fans questioning how Augusta National evaluates which personalities fit its broadcast environment.
Advice from Jim Nantz and a different approach
Ahead of the event, legendary broadcaster Jim Nantz offered Kelce simple advice on how to approach the Par 3 Contest. Nantz suggested focusing on light, personal questions, particularly about players’ families and the unique atmosphere of the event, rather than trying to do too much.
The guidance reflected the tone traditionally associated with Masters coverage, which often leans into storytelling and subtle moments rather than high-volume entertainment. Kelce’s debut, however, took a more energetic approach.
However, Kelce’s first Masters appearance did exactly what ESPN likely expected. It got people talking. Whether that attention is viewed as positive or negative is another story.
