Anthony Joshua is a two-time unified heavyweight champion, on a quest to make it three. As you would expect, his fortune is vast, with flashy cars, expensive watches, and private jets all being part of the package. But you may be surprised to learn that all is not what it seems, and the boy from the Watford council estate is still humble as a man.

Growing up on a council estate, the British version of government projects, in Watford, just outside of north London, Anthony Oluwafemi Olaseni Joshua was just a normal kid. Known locally as Femi, he played sports with the other boys, loved video games and after his parents’ divorce when he was a teenager, dabbled with a bit of naughtiness.

Getting caught with a bit of marijuana at 18 years old, he spent two weeks in prison and then was released with an ankle monitor. To keep him out of trouble, he was sent to live with his mother in Golders Green. Only a few miles down the road, it was enough to break the cycle that Femi was on at the time, and to fill his days, he followed a cousin down to the local boxing gym, the Finchley ABC, which was also the home gym of Derek Chisora.

At the gym, he became, quite literally, another person. Shedding the name that he had been known by previously, he was now “Anthony”, “AJ”, or simply “Josh” to his Finchley pals. He straightened his life out and found his calling, seeing a meteoric rise in his fortunes, winning the Olympic gold medal only three years after lacing up his first pair of gloves.

With an almost dream-like ascent in the world boxing ranks after turning pro, Anthony Joshua has amassed a fortune in winnings and sponsorship money. Those cars and private jets? Provided to him by sponsors. One of his closest friends, Freddie Cunningham, who now works for AJ as his marketing manager, explains it by saying, “He’s seen in private jets, wearing expensive watches, and driving around in nice cars, but the jets are all sponsored. We’ve never paid for a private jet, or a helicopter, in our life. He gets a signature car from Land Rover.”

The money that he does make, he likes to shower gifts on the people who helped him to get to where he is. He regularly supplies Finchley ABC with equipment and gloves, and stops by every week to talk to the kids working out there. His amateur trainer, Sean Murphy, was given a new BMW by the champ back in 2017, and he regularly takes his old school pals on holidays and outings together.

His ex-girlfriend, Nicole Osbourne, mother to his son JJ, was given a half-million pound ($590,000) penthouse by Joshua, and he gave the Finchley ABC forty tickets to the Klitschko fight to be distributed to the kids.

But the gift closest to his heart is when he purchased his mother’s council flat for her. Yeta Odusanya spent her life as a social worker and is very house proud. She loves her flat and Anthony loves his mother. Although moving into his own house for training, he always returns when the fight is done to live with his mother in her two bedroom, ex-government housing apartment in north London, preferring to stay true to his roots.

His current financial situation is pretty rosy, with a fortune in the region of £115 million ($136 million) and it is set to nearly double with a £100 million ($118 million) payday for the Usyk rematch. But if you are waiting for the seemingly inevitable boxer-earns-a-fortune-and-loses-it-all story, you might have a long wait. Freddie Cunningham says that Joshua “is not spending that money. He’s accumulating money. He’s living a lifestyle that probably everyone wants him to live, or see him live, but he’s doing it in a smart way. Tactful.”

For a man whose focus is family, both his son and his mother, Anthony Joshua seems pretty level-headed about everything. A long way from the Watford council estate boy who very nearly chose the wrong path, but not so far that he can’t visit from time to time.
